How a broken heart sparked a total transformation

When Ashley Waterton first walked through the doors of IntoJobs’ Rockhampton office, he wasn’t quite sure where to start or what to do. He just knew he needed help to start turning things around.

Unemployed, unlicenced and facing several health challenges, it was the end of a 20-year relationship that was a turning point for the 41-year-old.

“It broke my heart. We have a 19-year-old son. I was finding it really hard there for a while. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get back on my feet after that. But we both just had to move on.” Ashley said

IntoJobs Mobile Employment Consultant, Amanda Simpson, could see that Ashley was determined to get things back on track.  She started by helping him get his car roadworthy and registered, worked on his resume and job-readiness skills, and supporting him through a local jobs program hosted by IntoJobs (delivered by MRAEL and part of the IntoWork Group). Over the next twelve months, with Amanda’s support, Ashley obtained his Working with Heights Card, White Card, a Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure and a Certificate III in Community Services.

Amanda recalls that whenever she suggested something that might help boost his credentials, Ashley would jump at the chance. “He’s motivated, that’s for sure. He’s not always exactly sure which path he wants to take but once he starts a course or a program, he commits to it one hundred per cent. He’s certainly in a much better position now than he was twelve months ago,” Amanda said.

Ashley lives with his dad who is fighting both bowel and lung cancer. With his siblings unable to offer support, Ashly moved in with his dad and has become his primary carer.

“I’ve just have to be there for him, you know?” Ashley said.  “There’s nobody else who can do anything for him, so I just have to do it myself. I’ve got to fix my dad up, got to get him right.”

Ashley now works night shifts as a labourer at Olssons Salt Works and is thriving. He’s also considering using his Community Services qualification to find work as a carer. But for now, Ashley couldn’t be happier with the skills he’s gained and the stability and structure of long-term employment.

Ashley said he owes a lot to Amanda and IntoJobs for helping him find a way forward.  “Amanda’s been very supportive and helpful. She’s always there when I need her and helped me get back on my feet. I feel ready now. I’m up for whatever comes next.” he said.
